Battles of Lesnaya, Poltova (2x), Gangut
After paintings by Martin le jeune : (1) Image of the battle of Lesnaya (September 28, 1708) (2) Image of the battle of Poltova (june 27,1709 ; (3) Image of the defeat of general Lowenhaupt at Poltova (june 30, 1709) ; (4) Image of naval battle at Gangut (Hanlo head, July 27, 1714). Paris, Larmessin ca. 1715 or Moskva, Zukow 1717 (compare Shapero: Russia & Eastern Europe 2009; NY Public Library, 2003). - Etchings 52x74 cm ; text at the bottom (in Cyrillic); no text in verso ; later, full colour.
Four large etchings of important battles of the emerging Russian Empire, key events in the Northern wars (with Charles XII of Sweden). In the complicated dynamics of the Northern war in which many countries participated, the main actors were Sweden (King Charles XII) and Russia (Tsar Peter). IN 1707/1708 the Swedes decided to attack Russia in the heard (than Moscow). They entered Russian territory from Lithuania aimed at Smolensk, than decided to go south. Once in the Ukraine Charles XII waited for reinforcements and ammunition which was to arrive with fresh troops under general Lowenhaupt. However he was attacked and beaten by Russian troops at Lesnaya (plate 1), so that Charles XII had to start the decisive battle of Poltova (plate 2) weakened and badly prepared. He was beaten in a few hours and fled. The rest of his troops reorganised themselves under Lowenhaupt but were decisively beaten at June 30 (plate 3)
