Reisch, G.
World
1503 - 1st State - woodcut - B/W as issud. (Shirley 22)
World map from the Margarita Philosophica. Restorations to the left, upper and right margin, not affecting the plate, as well as a tiny restoration to the center fold, without any loss. One windhead (Meridies) with small inlay. Note in the text : "hic non terra sic mare est", questioning the land connection between Africa and Asia and closing the Indian Ocean.

Zurner, Adam Friedrich
Planisphaerium Terrestre
Amsterdam c. 1700 - 505 x 575 mm - strong paper, original colour
This map has been made for Pieter Schenk. It shows the routes of various explorers, a.o. Dampier. Encircling the two hemispheres are markings of winds and set around the border 26 smaller astronomical diagrams and hemispheres of the world, according to different projections. Furthermore, two larger celestial hemispheres and, at the bottom, a panorama illustrating tempests, earthquakes, etc. Below, textual commentary on the natural phenomena depicted. Zurner's striking map was sometimes included in copies of Pieter Schenk's Atlas Contractus, which was published from c. 1700 (Shirley 639).

Lirelli, Salvador
Le Globe Terrestre
1786 - 585 x 700 mm - copper plate engraving - contemporary outline colour - excellent condition - folds stretched out and supported. Dedication to the King of Sardinia, contemporarily partly erased. (Tooley, Antarctica nr 79, edition 1780?? = 1786)
Rare and highly attractive worldmap, concentrating on Australia and Cook's voyages. Shown are one worldmap in Mercators' projection (between 45 degrees North and South) and two hemispheres in polar projections, all showing the three tracks of Cook's voyages. Thick ice mountains are shown all around the South Pole, that shows no land. This is an original approach, quite different from the landmass, as in early maps. Salvador Lirelli was director of the Observatory of Turin from 1791 onwards and became "geographe royale". The map states that it has been made in 1786. The dedication to the King of Sardinia is made eligible, probably for political reasons and around the time of the making of the map.
