Description

The plan shows Querétaro and the hills around it, the Cerro de San Pablo, San Gregorio, La Cantera, El Jacal and El Cimatario, with the Rio Blanco running through the city, the Alameda, the Calle del Hospital, the haciendas and garitas on the roads out of town, and the Cerro de la Campana to the west. A red line marks the perimeter held by the Imperial troops of the Emperor Maximilian, a yellow line the lines of the Liberal army that besieged them from March to May 1867. An inset gives a detailed plan of the Colegio de la Santa Cruz, with the Plaza, the Huerta and the Pantheon de la Cruz.

The convent of La Cruz was Maximilian's headquarters during the siege; it was there that the city was betrayed on the night of 14 to 15 May 1867, and on the Cerro de la Campana, shown on this plan, Maximilian was executed on 19 June 1867.

Historical Significance

Prince Felix zu Salm-Salm (1828-1870), a Prussian officer who had fought in the American Civil War, served as aide-de-camp to Maximilian at Querétaro and was taken prisoner with him. His account of the siege and of the Emperor's last days appeared in 1868 in German, as Queretaro. Blätter aus meinem Tagebuch in Mexico, and in English as My Diary in Mexico in 1867. This plan comes from that account; the pencil note on the sheet records its source.
