New acquisition: the Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493
We are pleased to announce the acquisition of a complete copy of Hartmann Schedel's Liber Chronicarum, the Nuremberg Chronicle, in the first Latin edition printed by Anton Koberger on 12 July 1493. With more than 1,800 woodcut illustrations by the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, where the young Albrecht Durer was then apprenticed, it is the most richly illustrated book of the fifteenth century and the summit of the German incunabulum tradition. Its city views, world map and portraits shaped how Europe pictured the world on the eve of the age of discovery. The copy is bound in stiff vellum and is available to view by appointment.
