New acquisition: the closing volume of Chatelain's Atlas Historique, 1720
The seventh and last volume of Henri Abraham Chatelain's Atlas Historique has joined the collection: the Suplément à l'Atlas historique, Tome VII & dernier, Amsterdam, L'Honoré & Châtelain, 1720. Our copy is complete.
As its title says, this volume gathers the pieces of chronology, genealogy, history and other sciences that had been left out of the six earlier volumes. Behind an engraved allegorical frontispiece and a title-page in red and black follow dissertations by H. P. de Limiers and 44 plates: maps, genealogical tables, chronological tables, heraldry and other illustrations. They deal with chronology, the Occident and the Orient, the regions and ruling houses of France, Austria, Italy, Spain and Portugal, military history, with plates on fortification and on the navy, and religion and mythology.
One dissertation is devoted to the Dutch House of Wassenaer, with its own genealogical plate. It refers to events of "l'année derniere 1719", and so was written while the volume was in the press.
With this volume we now hold three parts of the Atlas Historique: the Asia volume of 1719, the first part of the second volume on the Empire (1718) and this closing supplement. It is described in full, with photographs, in the collection.
