Joannes Janssonius

Joannes Janssonius (Arnhem 1588 to Amsterdam 1664) married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius, took over the Mercator-Hondius atlas with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius, and built it into the Novus Atlas, which by 1658 ran to eleven volumes and rivalled the Atlas Maior of Blaeu. His maps of the Americas, of Peru, of the East Indies, were issued in Latin, Dutch, French, German and Spanish editions and are found in fine contemporary colour.

In 1652 Janssonius added a volume of the ancient world, the Accuratissima Orbis Antiqui Delineatio, with maps engraved after Ortelius's Parergon by Abraham Goos and others: the last of the great atlases of classical geography.
